The murder of Dr. Tiller and the President’s speech at Notre Dame have ratcheted up the controversy over Roe/Wade and the issue of abortion rights. The language employed is an important element in the national discussion.

When I hear the invoking of slavery and the term Holocaust continuously used, I recall a series of letters in Ebony Magazine some years ago from black women vehemently objecting to the comparison to slavery being used in the opposition to Roe/Wade. I recall a letter in the Chicago Tribune from a Jewish women’s organization, angered by the continuous use of the word Holocaust by those attempting to recriminalize abortion.

Since that language is being used so freely today, I expect and hope to see objections from everyone who understands the basic and important issue: women’s autonomy over their lives in all races, religions and cultures.
