On June 5, utility giant Ameren requested that the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) allow a $226 million increase in their delivery rate. Ameren’s request comes just a few months after a $160 million rate hike. Their latest request would cost the average AmerenCILCO customer an additional $64 for electricity and $55 for natural gas throughout the year.

As if this isn’t enough, the Illinois-American Water Company is seeking a rate increase equal to almost $120 per year for their Peoria consumers. This too comes after a rate increase for the company in 2007.

The state legislature recently passed a bill requiring the ICC to accept public comments before ruling on a rate increase. I urge all of you to call the ICC customer complaint line at toll-free (800) 624-0795 to voice your opinions on this matter.

We have to let our opposition be known. I will be gathering petition signatures to present to the ICC before their rulings. Please help me get signatures by accessing the petition online at www.housedem.state.il.us/members/gordonj, calling my office at (309) 681-1992, or emailing me at repjehangordon@gmail.com. By working together, we can show the ICC that Peorians can’t afford to pay even more.
