We Need Explicit Equal Rights for Women in the Constitution

by Dolores M. Klein, Peoria, IL

Did you miss it? When members of Congress read the Constitution aloud recently, a number of members joined representatives of national organizations outside the Capitol to remind the country of the need for the Amendment which is not yet included.

Within days, Justice Antonio Scalia made comments in an interview, adding to the already known need for an Equal Rights Amendment, that the 14th Amendment does not guarantee protection from discrimination on the basis of gender. We already knew there was no universal support for interpretation of the 14th for women. We know that no state ERA can protect all women.

Rather than the knee-jerk criticism that was heard, we owe him a standing ovation for saying what we’ve been saying for years!

Not another season of silence. We should build it into a clamor: ERA is simple justice.
