Observing Women’s History Month!

by Dolores M. Klein, Peoria, IL

Once again, Susan B. Anthony’s birthday, February 15th, a state holiday, got lost in between Lincoln’s birthday and President’s Day. We can hope that dedicated teachers pick up the observance and discuss with their students, women’s past and current status.

Back in 1986, her birthday was the center of Peoria NOW’s first awards ceremony. After a number of similar observances at the downtown library, Women’s Equality Day events were held yearly at Carver Community Center, in remembrance that the vote was finalized for women on August 26, 1920.

Currently Women’s History Month observances include International Women’s Day – the 100th Anniversary this year. The public is invited on March 19th, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon at the Methodist Atrium. This year’s speaker is Dr. Rita Ali, Director of Diversity at I.C.C.
