Happenings for April 2011

through May 24 – Bookmobile every two weeks on Tuesdays at the Shoppes at Grand Prairie from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. Admission is free. The Bookmobile will be located in front of Flat Top Grill.

April 2 – The not-for-profit organization Look. It’s My Book! is holding a gala fund raiser with dinner, music, entertainment and an auction beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Weaver Ridge Golf Club, 5100 N. Weaver Ridge Blvd. Dinner is at 7:00 p.m. The event, which is open to the public, costs $75 per person, w/reservations due by March 28 to Susan Davis, 563 E. High Point Road, Peoria, IL 61614. Price includes dinner & an open bar.

April 7 – The Peoria Disposal Company will host a public program on their plans for expanding the Peoria City/County Municipal Waste Landfill. The meeting will be at 6:00 p.m. at the Grand Hotel (formerly a Holiday Inn), Brandywine Drive, Peoria, IL.

April 8 – 25 – Lily Show daily at the Luthy Botanical Gardens.

April 9 – Play for the Promise – A casino night event to support the Peoria Promise Foundation. The event will run from 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. at the Holiday Inn City Centre. Call 309-696-0951 or go online at: http://www.peoriapromise.org/

April 12 — Career Works 2011 will be held from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on the Illinois Central College East Peoria Campus.

April 14 — Jim Hoppe, from Danvers, Illinois, will be the guest speaker at monthly meeting of the Peoria County Genealogical Society. The meeting is at the Lakeview Branch Library and starts at 7:00 p.m. Hoppe will discuss some of the hardships our ancestors endured.

April 15 – 22nd Annual Heart of Illinois Convention for Home Educators – Hosted by the Association of Peoria Area Christian Home Educations. The event will be the Peoria Civic Center. Register online at: http://www.apachecentralillinois.org/

April 16 – Peoria Glen Oak Zoo’s Easter Egg Hunt – Admission is $5.75/non-member child; $3/member child; $8.50/non-member adult. The Easter Egg Hunt is for children 0-9 years old. Call 309-686-3365.

April 16 – 1st Annual Peoria Women’s Club Spring Vendor Bazaar – Along with ACE Entertainment & Events Management, this organization will present a fun day of learning and networking from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the historic clubhouse of Peoria Women’s Club at 301 NE Madison. Over 30 vendors will be available. Admission is free; donations are welcome.

April 16 – The Great American Cleanup, sponsored by Keep Peoria Beautiful from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon. This is the largest annual spring litter cleanup. Help keep Peoria clean, green, and beautiful!

April 20 – Illinois MENTOR is hosting a Spring Open House at 4507 N. Sterling at 6:00 p.m. to provide info about their Host Home program. Refreshments provided while you listen to a powerful story of how this shared living arrangement made a difference in two lives. April 27 – May 1 – The opening reception for the 27th annual Fine Arts Exhibit at Peoria’s First United Methodist Church will be from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Activities are free & open to the public. More than 65 artists will be represented. This is a juried art exhibit. The opening will include live music by The Ed and Janet Kaizer Trio featuring Preston Jackson on guitar. The reception & exhibit will be in Wesley Hall at the church, located at the corner of Perry & Hamilton in downtown Peoria.

April 29 – May 1 – Plant Sale – daily at Luthy Botanical Gardens

April 30 – Run to Remember Fallen Officers @ Junction city, 5901 N. Prospect Rd. Race time: 8:00 a.m. This 5K/1 Mile Walk benefits the IL Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors. Entry fee is $20. Call 309-208-7844.
