Gordon Backed Legislation Makes Legislature More Transparent

To increase accessibility to General Assembly proceedings, State Rep. Jehan Gordon (D-Peoria) has backed legislation to make all roll call votes of the General Assembly available on the internet.

The house unanimously passed, House Bill 3103. The legislation requires the Legislative Information System (LIS) to post on the Illinois General Assembly Website (ILGA), www.ilga.gov, the floor and committee roll call votes taken by the General Assembly. Currently only the votes of bills on 3rd reading have the roll calls posted online. This is one of a number of reform measures that Gordon has supported to open up the legislative process. At the beginning of the 97th legislative session, Gordon supported changes to the House rules that would require any amendments to bills that were to be heard in committee had to have a public review period and be posted on the ILGA website before the committee met to allow time for citizen review and comment. Additionally, any amendments to bills would be required to have a one-hour notice before being debated on the floor, and a two-hour notice before being debated by a committee.
