Musings for July 2013

I have realized for myself and I’m sure many of you see the same thing. I cover four main topics: my son, my house and yard, reading, and a little on national and world issues. I promised my son that I would not write about him. And I will not after saying that he is doing much better, and hasn’t had to go the hospital for a couple months. I am so thankful for that.

My house is still a pit, because there were several months I didn’t do much of anything, and I have yet to catch up. Starting in July I plan to take a room a week and really do a thorough, meticulous job on each room. The yard has overgrown so much because first the rain and now the heat. It is very much like a jungle and I have many wild flowers that have invaded my yard. I actually kind of like it, but it is not very neat looking. I’ll try to get out there early in the mornings and thin it a bit. As for local and international news, I watch the news at least every other day. I cannot stand to watch it more than that, because everything gets repeated all day long and it drives me crazy to see news over and over. I have starting asking that the television be turned off in any office I enter that has Fox News on. For a while I was taking Jason to his surgeon, and they always had Fox on. I finally had had it and asked the receptionist if she would change the channel. A woman in the waiting room was so irate that I thought she was going to hit me. It tells me a lot about a person if that is all they watch, but I need to be more tolerant.

I used to get a more of a middle view on the news from Newsweek, but they have gone digital and you have to read it on your computer. I don’t like doing it, but if all newspapers go to computers, I may not have a choice. I still get much of my news from PBS which I think is more balanced than any other source. I particularly like Brian Williams who does news at 5:30 p.m. every day. He is on NBC but I also watch World News on PBS which is more informative without the bias or judgment on Fox and some other stations.

I am still constantly aware of how little people know of the world or even issues here at home. I know the media plays up to that ignorance and sensationalism is the rule of the day. I am also amazed how much people are willing to give out via Facebook, Twitter ,etc. and then are upset when they find how a business or other entity can pick up a lot of personal information. I know there is so much out there in Cyberspace and I personally do not want everyone out there to know all about me. I think this information age can be very harmful, and I don’t believe many realize the amazing amount of information that is s available to almost anyone. I, for one, do not put info out that might lead to compromises in relation to my life.

Young people I believe are extremely vulnerable to predators and others who might use information in a damaging way. Social media may seem like fun and okay to put yourselves out there, but no one knows just how much can turn into harmful issues. I think that our technology has almost run amok, because not many realize just how much info can come back to bite us. It seems that each day brings us a new story like Snowden who found and released National Security issues including the spying of other nations the U. S. has been involved in.

I may be a dinosaur and want to keep more things private, but I feel much more comfortable with a little out rather than a lot. I think social media is beginning to run amok and I know young people don’t understand the consequences of divulging too much personal information.

I’ve read a couple P. D. James novels this month as well as several by Jan Karon. She is the author of the Mitford Series which I had read several of previously. I found two new (to me) titles recently at our church sale and thoroughly enjoyed them. They cover a small town and a minister with old-fashioned values and actions with no violence sex or profanity. It’s like reading stories that took place in my childhood. Stay cool!
