West Peoria Senior Citizens, here is an opportunity to get out of the house in this long winter season.  Take the opportunity to go to the West Peoria Senior Citizen, Retiree Social Group monthly gathering at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 26 at City Hall. Bring a friend, attend and enjoy the activities.

Disaster preparedness will be the topic for the Neighborhood Watch meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 11 at City Hall. The more we learn about this topic, the better prepared we and our community will become. Residents Association will meet for its March meeting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 26. You are invited to attend.

The West Peoria Community Yard Sale will be held on May 16. Get your stuff together. Get your spring cleaning finished so that you can participate in the community-wide sale. If you want your address listed on the Yard Sale flyers call Maggie Moore at 673-0535 and she will add your information to the publicity.

The City of West Peoria has an opening for an officer of the Plan Commission. The Plan Commission meets the third Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. in City Hall. If you are interested, please contact City Hall. City Hall is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Phone number is 674-1993.

The 2015 Consolidated Election is scheduled for April 7, 2015. Early voting will be available from Monday, March 23 until Saturday, April 4. The courthouse is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. except for Good Friday, when it closes at noon. It will be open weekends from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturdays and noon until 3 p.m. on Sundays. Absentee  ballots can be requested online at http://www.peoriacounty.org/countyclerk/absent/  or by calling 672-6070. West Peoria city candidates are: James R. Dillon, mayor; April Silver, city clerk; Hazel A. Thomas, alderman, Ward 1; Jeffery A Reagan, alderman, ward 2; Mary “Margie” Barnes and Jason Barth, alderman ward 3. (Only vote for one in the alderman 3 election.)

There are two upcoming road races planned for West Peoria streets this spring. A 5K Race/Walk will be held on Sunday March 1 starting and finishing at the Franciscan Recreation Complex. The race begins at 2 p.m. with packet pickup and race day registration beginning at 1 p.m. Awards will be presented immediately following the finish. A  post-race party will be happening at Jimmy’s Bar on Farmington Road. For more information visit www.stpatpeoria.com.

Planning is also in the early stages for the 2015 Jamboree Run. The 4 mile run/1 mile walk is scheduled for June 6. Volunteers are needed. Want to visit Rocky Glen? Meet at Jimmy’s Bar on Farmington Road at 10 a.m. on Saturdays, March 14 or April 11. It is a rigorous hike so come prepared. More information can be obtained at FriendsofRockyGlen.org   or 573-2354.

The West Peoria Garden Club meets the first Monday of the month throughout the year. Dues are $10/annually. More information can be obtained from Donna Schwab at 256-8233.

Boy Scout Troop 11 will be selling trash bags again this spring. Profits from this fundraiser help with the costs of summer camps for the boys.

Garbage cans need to be returned to a spot on the property that isn’t visible from the street after pick up days within a short period. Some homes have their cans out on the sidewalks for days after pickup. This only makes our city look trashy and dirty. Please take yours back as soon as you can.

April 9 is a national day of recognition for public transportation, Stand Up for Transit Day. The recognition is to reinforce the importance of public transit for communities and citizens. Special events are being planned.
