Heights News

I recently read an article I found quite interesting. “In 2008, Airbus made the new A380 quieter than any previously manufactured plane in an effort to improve passenger experience. Unfortunately, Airbus didn’t realize until after they shipped the aircraft that the quieter cabin resulted in more unpleasant sound for passengers, in the form of bathroom noise, talking and other audible sounds (e.g. coughing, sneezing and crying). The result was a worse experience for both passengers and pilots and caused Airbus to recall some of the fleet and reengineer the A380 once more to add more sound back to the cabin.”

I must admit that I had a “smirky smile,” as I was reminded how frequently we experience the “Law of Unintended Consequences.” I am sure you have seen it also; those knee-jerk changes individuals or organizations make hoping to show some benefit. However, because of “The Law,” some changes bring about “consequences” that were not considered and are perhaps worse than the initial situation.

Now, I have no aspirations of functioning as an expert in “The Law,” however, I do believe there are ways to avoid it. One way is proper planning. In my role with Richwoods Township government and as one engaged in the community, I know that effective communities, organizations and individuals avoid “knee-jerk reactions” and “The Law,” through proper planning.

One example is the Chamber of Commerce that is planning to make another “eventful” holiday season. Dec. 12 you will experience “Chocolate in the Heights.” Participating merchants will be offering delicious chocolate treats to make your shopping experience more enjoyable. And on Dec. 19, come enjoy great savings with the “Red & White Sale.” Every day is a great day to enjoy the shops and services that The Heights has to offer. The “Expected Consequences” of your visit is a wonderful, aromatic, taste-tantalizing prelude to the holiday season. You can see more planned events at the chamber website: www.peoriaheightschamber.com.

Another example is one that you probably are not aware of, unless you need us: township government. Although there are aspects of township government required by the State of Illinois, we still have great freedom to determine township needs and develop programs to address them. That sounds simple, but it requires diligent planning to assure “The Law” does not take effect. One such program is the “Richwoods Township/Peoria Heights High School Leadership Academy,” which began the planning process 12 months before its first workshop was held. But, the planning has borne fruit. Nine young people graduated and now are developing the Academy project. There are other youth programs, tax assessing, senior programs and Rebuilding Together, which have required planning to assure even Township government does not fall prey to “The Law.” Examples of planned programs can be found on the Richwoods Township website: www.toi.org/richwoodstownship.

We look forward to your visit to Richwoods Township and Peoria Heights and enjoying the expected, eventful result.
