New solar bus shelters installed

Greater Peoria Mass Transit District (GPMT) CityLink has been installing new bus shelters throughout the transit district for the past two years. CityLink wanted to improve passenger safety and increase bus stop visibility.
In 2014, CityLink obtained the new solar-powered, LED-lighted shelters with red-hipped roofs, red railings and a silver iodized finish. The solar powered lighting is an added benefit that provides lighting at night for the passengers waiting for the bus, especially in areas that have limited street lights.
The initial 16 shelter locations where determined based on safety concerns and the need to replace existing shelters in poor condition. The second round of 22 bus shelters are being installed at locations that previously did not have any bus stop amenities, such as at the corner of Rohmann and Sterling next to SouthSide Bank.
CityLink will have a total of 63 solar-powered shelters in the area. If you have recommendations for proposed locations, contact CityLink at 309-676-4040.
