Cancellations due to the “stay at home” mandate include Neighborhood Watch, May 13; West Peoria Book Club no May meeting; West Peoria Township Clean Up Day will be rescheduled.

Boy Scout Troop 11 members are selling 30-gallon trash bags. To order, (100 bags for $17) contact a Troop 11 member or call Scoutmaster Bob DeSutter, 369-8078. Waste Management will not be picking up bulk items until further notifice. If residents need to dispose of large items such as mattresses take them to the Peoria County Landfill, 11501 W. Cottonwood Road in Edwards. Phone the landfill, 309-565-4281.

West Peoria Residents Association community garage sale will be 7 a.m.- 3 p.m. May 16. Any West Peoria resident interested in participating should contact Maggie Moore at maggiemo@mtco.com or call 309-673-0535.

July 4 is a BIG day in our community. This year marks the 50th anniversary for our July Fourth parade, the longest running in Central Illinois. Volunteers are needed. Call City Hall, 309-674-1993, or use the City’s website to volunteer. If you were in our first parade, please contact Sharon McBride at mcbride2413@sbcglobal.net. Each year, a West Peoria person is honored as Grand Marshal for the parade. Submit a short letter of nomination to: mayor@cityofwestpeoria.com or by stopping by City Hall.

West Peoria’s Annual Memorial Day Service is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 23 at the War Memorial in Franciscan Park. Bruce Brown, a Marine veteran and community activist, is the scheduled speaker.

This has been a different and difficult spring. Many kindnesses have happened here in West Peoria. We do live in a good and caring community. All, take care and stay careful.
