“Summer Tips for Lymphedema” will be presented on Monday, April 21st at 5:30 p.m. at the Cancer Center for Healthy Living (Hult Health Ed. Center). Molly Netties, occupational therapist and Deb Meyer, physical therapist along with the Lymphedema Prevention & Management Program at the Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation will sponsor the event.
Lymphedema, or chronic swelling due to an accumulation of fluid in tissue spaces, is a progressive condition. It can be caused by infection, surgery, radiation or trauma and is sometimes a side effect of cancer treatment when lymph nodes are removed.
IPMR’s lymphedema program is one of Peoria’s Komen for the Cure grant sites. Netties and Meyer teach precautions to reduce risk and treat patients with the condition in Peoria, Pekin, and surrounding communities.
Summertime activities can increase the risk, so the presentation focuses on summer hazards with travel tips, summer hobbies and sports as they relate to lymphedema.
The program is free and open to the public.
