2008 USTA FUTURES FIELD STRONG AS EVER! 

The field for the 2008 USTA Futures of Peoria professional tennis tournament has just been reported from the ITF office in London. The depth of this year’s draw is definitely of the same caliber as last year! 

A full squad of University of Illinois players will take part in competition. Adriano Biasella of Italy, St. Louis University’s Lance Vodicka, 16 year old 2007 quarterfinalist, Rhyne Williams, and Bryan Koniecko, Ohio State’s top player, are just a few of the familiar faces you’ll see return this year. 

The tournament runs July 5-13 on the clay courts of the Clubs at River City.

Qualifying rounds begin Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and continue through Monday. The main draw starts Tuesday morning continuing through the week. The doubles final will be on Friday evening again this year followed by the singles final, as always, on Sunday. Match times will be listed in the Peoria Journal Star. Admission is free. Concessions will be on sale throughout the tournament. Plenty of covered seating is available. Lawn chair seating is also available. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Peoria.

Did you know there are over 7000 nerve endings in the sole of your feet?  The foot is a map to your entire body.  By stimulating the nerve endings located in your feet, reflexology can relax your body and aid in your body’s natural ability to heal.  A ten minute reflexology treatments can provide relief from pain and nausea, decrease stress, and improve circulation.  Join Becky Cobb for a hands-on workshop that will demonstrate how you can do reflexology for yourself or other family members. People who are newly diagnosed often feel lost and have the same questions, such as:

·         How do I find out about clinical trials?

·         What nutrition guidelines should I follow?

·         Where can I turn for help?

The Cancer Center for Healthy Living now offers a Cancer Survival 101 program to help answer these questions and more.  This is a once a month, 90 minute program for people who are newly diagnosed and those who care for them.  The presentation is held at Illinois CancerCare located on Wood Sage Road on Route 91.  This program is free of charge and will include a lunch.  Registration is limited to the first 30 people for EACH session.  To reserve your spot call 693-8139. Debra will be using the book Calming Your Anxious Mind, by Jeffrey Brantley, MD.  The session will combine readings and guided meditations to learn how mindfulness and compassion can free you from anxiety, fear, and panic. You do not need to purchase the book to participate. Sessions run from 11:00 a.m. to noon at the Cancer Center for Healthy Living located at 5215 N. Come explore the health benefits of  Feng Shui with the Cancer Center for Healthy Living and Becky Cobb.  Feng Shui is the Chinese art of living in harmony with your surroundings.  Using the five elements of wood, water, fire, metal and earth throughout your home can affect your wealth, happiness and health.  Workshop will be held on Tuesday, July 22 at 5:30 pm at the Cancer Center for Healthy Living located on Knoxville Ave.  In this workshop we will look at how you can improve your health with Feng Shui by simply incorporating the five elements into particular areas of your home.  This will be a fun and interactive workshop; please bring a simple drawing of your home or apartment showing the location of all the rooms and it will be helpful if you know the direction your house faces.  Space is limited.  To reserve your spot please call 693-8139.

    The Peoria Park District is proud to present the annual Fireworks Spectacular at Glen Oak Park, Thursday, July 3rd.  Grab your lawn chairs and blankets and head on down to Glen Oak Park to spend the day and celebrate with our great line-up of entertainment. 

The Amphitheatre gates open at 4:00 and the flag is raised at 4:15 by Peoria Central ROTC. At 4:25 Molly Smith, the PPD Hometown Idol will perform followed by the Great Expectations Show Chorus and Community Children’s Theatre at 4:30.  A special performance by Jammsammich will entertain you from 6:00-7:30pm. The entertainment finishes with the Peoria Municipal Band at 8:00 and the big fireworks finale at dark. 

Bring your own picnic or purchase food that will be offered by the Peoria Park District. CityLink will be shuttling people from Evergreen Square to the park for a small fee. There is no cost to attend the event so come on and celebrate Independence Day the American way!

The majority of the Peoria Housing Authority Board of Commissioners will be attending the Peoria School District 150’s “Committee of a Whole” meeting on Tuesday, June 24th at the Peoria Public Schools Administrative Office at 3202 N. Wisconsin Ave. The meeting is regarding the new Harrison Community Learning Center School.

After more than a month without ice, Owens Center will reopen both ice skating rinks on Monday, June 23. The Peoria Park District facility was closed May 11 through June 22 while refrigeration equipment was repaired and updated and valves and cooling lines were replaced. The facility’s underground fuel lines for the building’s generators were also replaced during this major overhaul.Owens Center will open with their regular Monday public skate hours 1:00-2:30 p.m. as well as their open Freestyle Skating and Developmental Hockey schedules. Summer skating lessons will begin on Tuesday, June 24 with evening lessons.             The second session of summer swim lessons at both Lakeview and Gwynn Family Aquatic
Centers begins on June 23.             

Lakeview has morning lessons held daily Monday through Thursday beginning at 9:00 am. Evening lessons are held twice a week at beginning at 5:30 p.m. with a choice of lessons on either Monday and Wednesday, or Tuesday and Thursday.             

Gwynn has morning lessons held daily Monday through Thursday at 11:30 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. depending on age of participant. Evening lessons are held on Tuesday and Thursday at 6:15 or 6:45 p.m. depending on age of participant.
