KidsRock4Kids on November 1st in Washington, IL

Posted by Debbie Adlof on 28th October 2008

FALL INTO FUN

NOVEMBER COMMUNITY EVENT SCHEDULE

KidsRock4Kids is pleased to announce the following FREE Community events for the month of November:

saturday – november 1st – invisible children presents: go!

KidsRock4Kids is thrilled to invite you to Washington District Library (Media Room) to meet the 2008 Invisible Children street team, and view the movie premiere of their new movie “Go!”

For more than 20 years the people of Northern Uganda have been victims of a brutal and vicious war. An entire generation of teenagers has grown up knowing only fear and violence. For many, their indoctrination into the LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army) began as young as the age of 10. In the case of girls held captive by the LRA, 11 and 12 year olds are forced to become “wives” (sexual slaves) of the grown male soldiers. Although a treaty has been signed between the government and the LRA, the damage and devastation remain.

The Schools for Schools program is a unique non-profit whose sole focus is to bring awareness and provide necessary supplies and educational materials to these children. Their new film “GO!” will provide a firsthand account from an amazing group of teens who recently traveled to Northern Uganda and saw the impact up close and personal. KidsRock4Kids is proud to do our small part in helping this program continue its mission.

FREE TO ATTENED – movie premiere starts at 10 am – limit of 80 attendees

Monday – november 10TH – free thanks and giving art day

School is out on Monday, November 10th. Why not spend the day having fun and getting a head start on the holidays? Late Night BU event planned for Halloween

Posted by Debbie Adlof on 28th October 2008

The first of seven “Late Night BU” events at the Markin Center on the Bradley University campus will be a Halloween-themed event on October 31 from 10:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m. A collaboration between the Wellness Center and Student Activities, Late Night BU is an initiative aimed at providing students  late-night, alcohol-free entertainment under the Alcohol Action Plan instituted last spring.

“For years we’ve been hearing freshman say they have nothing to do on weekends,” said Lyndsey Withers, interim coordinator of alcohol education and awareness programs. “The only thing they say they have to do is go drink; they say their options are to stay in, or go out and drink. This is another big option for them so they can still feel a part of the student body.”

The inaugural event will include psychic readings, sports inflatables (like a Velcro wall), a video game tournament, and a showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show. The theater department will also be involved. “We’ll be showing the movie,” Withers said, “but theater will be doing a lot of interactive, costume-type things.” Intramurals and the pool will be available at all Late Night BU events.

A live band will perform on November 22 at the Center and a stress-relief themed event is being considered for December.

The Activities Council of Bradley University (ACBU) also has moved many of its events to a later time slot to provide late night entertainment options for students.

To ease concerns of residents near the Markin Center about a 2:00 a.m. closing time, Withers said about 100 volunteers will be stationed at the doors and on campus to remind students to be quiet and well behaved.
