Peoria City/County Health Department Sponsors Osteoporosis Screenings

The Peoria City/County Health Department (PCCHD) is sponsoring an Osteoporosis Heel Screening Event on Friday, February 26, 2010, from 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at The Institute for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (IPMR), 6501 North Sheridan Road, Peoria.

This FREE screening is for any woman over the age of 50 or with any of the following risk factors:
*Family history of osteoporosis
*Caucasian or Asian
*Under 130 pounds
*Low calcium intake
*Inactive lifestyle
*Tobacco or alcohol consumption
*Certain medications such as steroids for long periods of time

For this screening, women will have to take off one sock and shoe in order to perform the test. Women are asked not to wear pantyhose to the event due to time constraints. The screening will take about 10-15 minutes to complete and everyone will receive results the day of the event.

To reach optimal peak bone mass and continue building new bone tissue as you get older, there are several factors you should consider:
*Take in adequate amounts of calcium and Vitamin D
*Increase bone mass when young
*Prevent bone loss, fractures, and falls
*Get stronger with weight-bearing exercise
*Limit alcohol consumption
*Stop smoking

Space is limited for this event, so call IPMR at (309) 692-8110 to sign up. For more information about the Osteoporosis Heel Screening Event, call the Peoria City/County Health Department at (309) 679-6131. For information on other public health issues, visit our website at www.pcchd.org .
