Red Cross promotes sober driving on St. Pat’s Day

Designated drivers can enjoy free nonalcoholic beverages at participating bars

This St. Patrick’s Day, the American Red Cross Central Illinois Chapter is making it easy for revelers to designate a sober driver. The Red Cross, IDOT, Baumgarten Distributing and the Tazewell County Health Department are teaming up with local bars to offer free nonalcoholic beverages to designated drivers.

WHEN: Wednesday, March 17, 2010, all day.

WHAT: At participating locations, designated drivers can enjoy free nonalcoholic beverages in special “You Drink & Drive. You Lose” cups. Bars will hang banners and posters indicating their participation the event. New this year, bars will also hand out napkins with the message: “Be Safe. Choose a designated driver.”

WHY: “Designating a driver on St. Patrick’s Day means that you and your friends will return home safely,” said Marie Dietrich of the Red Cross Injury Prevention Department. “We hope that this program brings awareness to the problem of impaired driving, and gives people an incentive to celebrate responsibly.”

WHO: This event is sponsored by the Red Cross, the Illinois Department of Transportation, Baumgarten Distributing and the Tazewell County Health Department. This is the fourth year the Red Cross has sponsored the designated driver promotion. Last year, the Red Cross distributed 2,500 cups to area bars.

In 2010, the Red Cross will continue the promotion at select bars on July Fourth.
