High school students participating in the ASM Materials Camp at Bradley University July 26 through 30 will gain real-world experience and an increased understanding of metal materials on Monday during four workshops on microstructure analysis, materials processing, mechanical properties of metals and failure analysis.
Among the workshop activities:
•Students will mount, polish, and chemically etch metal samples and observe them using high-powered microscopes
•Students will build a moving robot arm to simulate a human arm lifting a mass
•Students will use their own hands to stretch aluminum and watch it break
•Students will study what supercooled marshmallows, ginormous lawnmower blades, and the sinking of the Titanic have in common
•and more
The students will present their findings on Friday, July 30, in Baker Hall room B52 from 10 to noon. The media also are invited to cover these colorful PowerPoint presentations by the campers.
ASM International is a society dedicated to serving the materials science and engineering professions by supporting education and the advancement of scientific knowledge through materials camps across the country.
