May 3 – The Peoria ACLU Chapter’s annual meeting will feature Mr. Donald Jackson, president of the Peoria NAACP, speaking on “Civil Rights and Concealed Carry Gun Laws: With the Trayvon Martin Killing Justified by a ‘Stand Your Ground’ Law and with the Rise in Hate Groups–Do We Really Need Concealed Carry Laws?” The event takes place at the IVY Club, 1502 N. Galena Road, Peoria Heights, and begins with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The 2012 Sam Belfer Award goes to two Peoria education activists, Terry Knapp and Sharon Crews, who speak out at Peoria District 150 School Board meetings, to hold the district accountable and compel transparency in the public interest.
