Gordon Highlights IDOT Resource Fair to Hire Highway Maintainers

PEORIA, IL – State Rep. Jehan Gordon (D-Peoria) is encouraging veterans to attend a “Highway Maintainer Resource Fair” on Friday, April 27 from 2 PM to 6 PM and Saturday, April 28 from 8 AM to 12 PM at the Workforce Network office, located at One Technology Plaza, 211 Fulton Street in Peoria. The event is hosted by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).

“As the construction season begins, IDOT will be hiring more highway maintainers. This is a wonderful opportunity for people, and veterans in particular, who are looking for a great career opportunity,” Gordon said.

A highway maintainer is responsible for driving and operating maintenance trucks, plows, tractors, mowers and other heavy equipment. Highway maintainers also provide manual labor on the job site. They are also responsible for cleaning and clearing right-of-ways along highways and roads and making repairs to roads and bridges.

“Many of the skills that IDOT is looking for in the highway maintainer position are skills that our veterans already have,” Gordon said. “I hope that veterans from across the community visit this resource fair to learn about this fantastic employment opportunity.”

The highway maintainer job is a veteran’s preference position. Applicants are required to have a CDL license with a Class-A endorsement. All applicants must also take the standard examination for job applicants throughout the state at Central Management Services (CMS).
