The last of the 1930s-’40s screwball-comedy trilogy with ghosts helping a friend, “Topper Returns,” is scheduled to show on Saturday, May 12 at downtown Peoria’s nonprofit Apollo Theater.
Starring Roland Young as the befuddled titled character – full name Cosmo Topper – the three films shared the premise of friendly ghosts who linger on Earth to lend a hand when Topper needs help.
The original “Topper” starred Cary Grant and Constance Bennett as the affable spirits. “Topper Returns” features Joan Blondell as a mischievous ghost, plus Billy Burke, Dennis O’Keefe, Carole Landis and Eddie “Rochester” Anderson in a story about Topper returning the favor and helping a murder victim find her killer.
The 88-minute gem was released in 1941.
Show times at the Apollo are at 7:00 p.m. Donations are $5 and $4 for kids, students and seniors. For details call (309) 673-4343.
