Summer Reading 2012
Peoria Public Library’s “Reading is so Delicious” Summer Reading 2012 will reward all ages for reading just three hours a week from June 10 through July 22 with prizes, Chief’s tickets and the best party of the summer at Peoria Zoo on August 4.
The program is free and open to the public. Sign up anytime starting May 1 at any library location, the Bookmobile or at www.peoriapubliclibrary.org. Just click on the summer reading link and summer readers will be taken to the database that lets you sign up as an individual, family or group. Log reading progress each week with the same easy process.
Reading over the summer is for all ages and keeps kid’s school skills sharp while letting adults challenge themselves to get back into the reading habit or read more. It’s fun for the whole family and readers who stick with the program for five of the seven weeks earn a voucher for tickets to a Chief’s game. Those who read six of the seven weeks are rewarded with a fabulous day-long party at Peoria Zoo on Saturday, August 4 and entry into the grand prize drawing. The party includes animal shows, McDonald’s cookies, carnival games, water, ice cream and a barbershop quartet! The Grand Prize drawing will be held Monday, August 6th.
In the past the Summer Reading party was held on one weeknight for a few hours and grand prize winners had to be there to win. This year, readers can visit the Peoria Zoo free during open hours on August 4, enjoying special activities just for summer readers. Also new – if you can’t attend the party you may still be entered into the Grand Prize drawing and do not have to be present to win.
A Summer Reading Kick Off Event will be held on Saturday, June 2 with parties at 10:30 a.m. at North Branch and 2:00 p.m. at Lincoln Branch. Parties will feature “The Dean of Juggling.” The kickoff is for all ages and free and open to the public.
The summer will be filled with a variety of programs related to the theme, “Reading is So Delicious” including “Taste the Book” on June 12. Those entering are invited to combine love of reading with love of food and make an edible book. Entries can be baked or raw foods of any type, but they must be edible. Start thinking, watch for more information and be ready with your entry on June 12.
Watch for the “Reading is SO Delicious” online cookbook, a food film series, Foodie Fridays and Food Festivals along with edible crafts and a chocolate tasting. There will be edible jewelry making, cooking demonstrations and even Angry Bird cookies. Storytimes this summer will also feature the summer reading theme with everything from Scrumptious PJ storytimes to a gingerbread man storytime. Check the calendar at any library location or www.peoriapubliclibrary.com.
