State Rep. Jehan Gordon (D-Peoria) will be hosting an “Education Reform Panel Discussion” on Monday, May 7 at 6:00 PM at Illinois Central College North’s Arbor Hall in Room 261.
“Over the past year there have been many changes in the field of education that impact teachers directly, including Senate Bill 7. As these changes begin to be implemented in Peoria and across the state, legislators need hear about how these laws are affecting classrooms,” Gordon said. “I would like teachers from the Peoria area to have a chance to ask any questions they might have about these reforms and share their concerns.”
Last year, the General Assembly passed a landmark education bill, Senate Bill 7, which implements changes to the teacher evaluation system. This bill also requires school districts to base hiring and firing decisions on performance, instead of solely on tenure. It also adds training for evaluators and school boards. Rep. Gordon will be joined by Senate Bill 7 Sponsors, Representative Linda Chapa La Via and Senator Kimberly Lightford, representatives from the IFT, IEA, Sara Boucek from the Illinois Association of School Administrators and Darren Reisberg of the State Board of Education for a discussion on the state of education in Illinois.
“Teachers from across our community will have the opportunity to ask questions from legislators and experts who helped craft this legislation,” Gordon said. “If any teacher has questions or would like to express concern over the implementation about Senate Bill 7, please join us for this discussion.”
