Peoria County Accepting Summer Program Applications

Peoria County is currently accepting applications for its summer Civic Leadership Program, a free civic program that offers local high school students a unique opportunity to learn more about county government through hands-on activities at various County facilities. All Peoria County high school students are eligible to take the two-day course, including spring graduates and fall freshmen; class size is limited to 30 participants. The program is June 11 & 12; application deadline is May 25. Transportation is not provided, but lunch will be provided by Peoria County on both days. For a complete schedule or to download an application, visit http://www.peoriacounty.org/communications/civic or call (309) 495-4862. A brochure and application are attached.

Students participating in the summer program will have a role in a mock zoning hearing and emergency preparedness exercise. They may run for office in a mock election. They will tour the jail and crime lab at the Sheriff’s Office as well as tour the Peoria Riverfront Museum. They will inspect a bridge with the Highway Department, become friends with residents of Bel-Wood Nursing Home, and compete in a courthouse scavenger hunt. Mostly, they will enjoy learning the responsibilities and services of county government. For more information, call (309) 495-4862.
