Gordon Holds Anti-Crime Poster Contest

Rep. Jehan Gordon (D-Peoria) will be holding an anti-crime poster contest to promote the activities that youth around the community want to do without facing the threat of violence.

“Our community has dealt with a large amount of violence and crime during the past few summers. Everyone is affected when crime happens in our community, but this is especially true of children whose parents keep them inside during the summer,” Gordon said. “We want our streets to be safe for children to be able to play tag with neighbor kids, go to the park to play basketball with friends, and much more.”

The theme will be “Safe Streets, Safe Summer.” Each poster (8 ½ by 11 inch piece of white paper) should illustrate the activities that each child would like to be able to do safely in their neighborhood during the summer. Posters will be judged by neighborhood activists on their overall impact, effectiveness in conveying the theme, originality, and artistic merit.

“Every child deserves to enjoy their summer playing outside with friends, but this can only happen if our streets and neighborhoods are free from drugs, violence and crime,” Gordon said. “I encourage everyone to think about how they can help keep our streets safe for the children in our community.”

Entries should be mailed to Rep. Gordon’s constituent services office (300 E. War Memorial Drive, Peoria, IL 61614) and be postmarked by June 15. Winners will be notified by June 25, 2012. All participants and their parents will be invited to an ice cream social for participating in the program.
