State Rep. Jehan Gordon (D-Peoria) will speak about the benefits Urban Weatherization Initiative (UWI) during a June 11 press conference. Participants and administrators will also be on hand to discuss the details of the state funded energy efficiency program.
The Peoria Citizens Committee for Economic Opportunity (PCCEO) is one of ten organizations state wide to receive money from the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) for this job-training program, which trains workers in making weatherization repairs. PCCEO has partnered with Illinois Central College (ICC) to administer the program. Some of the training in the UWI course includes: repairing and replacing water heaters, air conditioners and heating units; preventing air infiltration through weather stripping, caulking, and window and door replacement; installing pipes and duct insulation; and job skills.
“One of the most important things we can do to help get people back to work is to make sure that they have the training they need to be successful. The Urban Weatherization Initiative will give people the technical skills they need to find a job and help homeowners save money on their utility bills,” Gordon said. “Our community is fortunate to have organizations like the PCCEO and ICC that work together to provide a variety of job training programs and resources to the entire community.”
