Illinois State Representative to Be On Hand for I-Cash Unclaimed Property Program
PEORIA, ILLINOIS (AUGUST 9, 2012) – Few Peoria area taxpayers are thinking income taxes in the summertime. But tax professionals note that mid-year is an ideal time to make adjustments that can significantly improve an individual’s tax position the next time he or she files.
To help Peoria area taxpayers learn about tax moves to make now, and during the rest of 2012, that can potentially lead to a larger refund or reduce the amount owed when filing next year, Peoria area Jackson Hewitt Tax Service locations are hosting “Tax Check-Up Week” beginning Monday, August 13 through Friday, August 17.
In addition, a representative from the State of Illinois will be on hand for the I-Cash unclaimed property program. I-Cash, part of the Illinois State Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division, connects state residents with their unclaimed property. The program was established in 1999 with the goal of helping Illinois residents through the process of reclaiming money or assets. It’s common for people to lose track of their assets when they move or when loved ones pass away, and businesses and banks are required to turn over unclaimed accounts to the State Treasurer’s office.
During “Tax Check-Up Week,” tax preparers at participating Peoria area Jackson Hewitt® offices will meet with taxpayers to conduct the Jackson Hewitt Tax Check-Up – a free step-by-step guide on the following mid-year considerations that can impact a tax return:
• Life Changes Impact
• Withholding Alignment
• Savings Tools
• Current-Year Expense Planning
• Expiring Provisions Alert
In addition, Jackson Hewitt tax preparers will offer to review taxpayers’ year-to-date financial profiles and earnings, as well as their most recent tax returns to ensure they took advantage of all of the credits and deductions available. They will also share information about when and how to amend a return, how to respond to an IRS or state tax notice, when to consider changing withholding status and other timely tips.
“With the year more than half over, Peoria area taxpayers who spend a few minutes now taking part in our 5-Point Tax Check-Up may find that they can positively impact their situations for the better when filing their 2012 tax returns,” said Mary Jo Roberts, Assistant Area Manager of Peoria Jackson Hewitt Tax Service. “By designating five days in August as ‘Tax Check-Up Week,’ we’re providing several options for taxpayers to visit an office to better understand actions to take now that can help minimize what they owe, or better position them to take home a larger tax refund next year.”
