Peoria, Illinois – September 19, 2012 – The Peoria County Farm Bureau Equine Committee is sponsoring a Horse Rescue Training Course on Sunday, September 30, 2012, at the Heart of Illinois Horse Arena located at 9201 N. Galena Road, Peoria (Route 29). Peoria County First Responders have been invited to participate in Hands-on training of horse handling in emergency situations.
Trainers from Trail Riders of DuPage (TROD) will conduct the session. TROD has conducted more than 75 equine rescue technique courses, and has trained more than 800 First Responders.
Participants will learn how to handle, halter and lead horses, improvise halters, and navigate obstacles. They will be presented with the typical behavior of a relaxed horse and one that is under stress. Students will also learn construction of a horse trailer, how to approach and investigate the trailer, and how to handle the horse until the veterinarian arrives.
The event will be held from 12 noon to 4:00 p.m., and is free to both participants and the general public. Questions can be directed to Equine Committee Chairman Rick Schotthofer at 258-5865 or the Peoria County Farm Bureau at 686-7070.
