Dr. Macdonald is correct about the unaccredited contributions of several military units. But there is a reason for it: The reason that the 80th Infantry Division was given “credit” for the liberation. True, F Company of the 3rd Cavalry was there first. But the Army and the Holocaust Museum at some point made the decision that no military group smaller than a Division would be given credit for a liberation – to do otherwise would invite chaos. So the smaller units do not receive the credit they deserve, but that decision was made, and it seems to be understandable.
In my book, The Box from Braunau: In Search of My Father’s War (AMACOM, 2009) I tell the story of the 3rd Cavalry’s arrival at Ebensee and also that of the 139th Evacuation Hospital.

I’m glad to see the Annual Neighborhood Awards Banquet is still going strong. I remember back in 1997 when I was chairman of the 1st Annual Banquet. A few years ago, my son Evan was honored at the banquet for his work as President of his neighborhood association.
