The Peoria Park District has been offering the national Hook A Kid On Golf (HAKOG) program since 1994 with much success. Since its start, Peoria’s program has reached more than 750 area disadvantaged children, focusing on “hooking” them on the game of golf.

It is offered solely to children who would not normally have the opportunity to play the game of golf, and our overall mission has always been to mold better citizens using golf as a tool. The program is offered free of charge to all participants, funded by outside donors and volunteer support.

Eight players from each HAKOG team are invited to participate each year in the Traditions of Golf Challenge, an international event that tests teams’ knowledge of the game in many areas. Gene Petty (site coordinator), Roger McChristian (coach) and Jim Baske (coach) instruct Peoria’s players.

Friday, August 8, teams will meet at the Golf Learning Center for instructional games and dinner. Play will begin at Kellogg Executive 9 at

8 a.m. on both Saturday, August 9 and Sunday, August 10.
