We've moved!

By Bill Dennis on Oct 02, 07 | 1:16 am

That's right. The Community Word Online Edition has picked up moved on down the line. The new site is here, which you might notice is an address very similar to the one you're looking at now. All we've done, actually, is switch to a much better platform, called WordPress MU. It's easier to use and if much more resistant to spam and trolls, which means we can operate with comments turned on, bringing this site into the 21st Century.

There will be other changes too, as this platform makes it easier to upload and display pictures. There are no plans to take down the old site, because there are no doubt links to articles here that would become worthless if we take it down. But eventually, all the posts made to the old platform will be ported over to the new.

Be sure to visit and leave a comment or two.

Illinois’ New Teen Driver Laws Explained

By Amanda Knowles on Aug 30, 07 | 4:30 pm

An article featured in the October issue of The Community Word outlined the potential pitfalls teen drivers face and the requirements for the state’s graduated licensing system. On August 20 of this year, Governor Blagojevich signed a law that tightens the restrictions imposed on young drivers with the intention of making teenagers more responsible drivers. This new law triples the amount of time a teen is required to have a learner’s permit, imposes a stricter curfew, and requires more instructor-supervised street driving. There's more to read. New Trend in Beauty Salon Goes Mobile

By Marie Blood on Aug 30, 07 | 4:29 pm

“Have Scissors, Will Travel,” should be Sharon Clark’s motto at her “Who Does Your Hair?” Beauty Salon.

Although she’s owner/operator of a full-service salon, Clark is convinced taking her hair styling talent to shut-ins and people who find it hard to get around in the winter is a new trend in beauty culture.

“I think there is a real need for it,” Clark said in a recent interview, “and I think it is an untapped market.”

New Bel-Wood building?

By Roger Monroe on Aug 30, 07 | 4:21 pm

Don’t be surprised if Peoria County officials soon announce plans to construct a new Bel-Wood Nursing Home. A recent study of the existing facility revealed the need for an estimated $12 million in updates.

Rather than spend that kind of money on changes and renovations, some in the County believe it would be fiscally wiser to build a new, modern and up-to-date nursing home.

The new building, costing an estimated $24 million, would be constructed on land near the existing Bel-Wood. The County could utilize available funding through the Public Building Commission to pay for construction. Consideration of such a proposal is in the discussion stage so the $24 million is speculative, says our source. There's more to read. Click here.

LaHood a front-runner in GOP departure from Congress

By Bill Knight on Aug 30, 07 | 4:16 pm

When U.S. Rep. Ray LaHood announced that he wouldn’t seek re-election, some progressives wondered: Did his decision stem from the difficulty of once more legislating by collaboration and compromise without the dominance of controlling both houses of Congress (indeed, all three branches of the federal government), or the difficulty of trying to be a part of cleaning up the colossal mess the Bush administration has made in the last six years?

Further, will Democrats accept the dismissive generalization that the 18th Congressional District is a “safe” Republican stronghold, or dedicate resources to a viable candidate? There's more to read. Click here.

Canaries in the Coal Mine

By Dale Goodner on Aug 30, 07 | 4:14 pm

Let’s just take a moment and talk about the birds and the bees. After all, these critters can teach us a good deal about the world. Remember, they share our need for clean air and water. You may have heard about the canary in the coal mine. Miners kept a caged bird nearby, the bird being slightly more sensitive to toxins in the air. The way it works is, when the critter kicks the bucket, get out! You could be next.

Earth’s climate is going through some pretty extreme changes and environmental indicators are all over the place. Animal and plant populations have been shifting away from their former ranges. Glaciers are retreating, permafrost is melting, and bird populations are declining at alarming rates. And now, even bees are disappearing. There's more to read. Click here.

Summary of New Laws in Illinois from Senator Dave Koehler

* A new law has gone into effect giving an additional layer of protection for citizens residing in assisted living facilities. House Bill 808 requires certain employees of assisted living facilities to have background checks as a requirement of their employment. Those employees subject to background checks would be those with direct access to residents, their living quarters and financial, medical and personal records. This list would include all individuals employed or retained by a health care employer as home health care aides, nurse aides, personal care assistants, private duty nurse aides or day training personnel.

*There has been an increase in a stipend used to help families of developmentally disabled families stay together. House Bill 1708 increases one of the eligibility criteria for the Family Assistance Program from $50,000 taxable income annually to $65,000 taxable income annually. The Family Assistance Program, in effect for over 15 years, is done on a random selection basis, with a computer generated selection of preliminary applicants being selected as funds become available. The stipend increase goes into effect immediately.

* Legislation now allows for the public to have a say in the meetings and proceedings of the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) has been signed into law by the governor. House Bill 736 will insure transparency and public participation at each regular and special meeting of the ICC that is open to the public. The new law also provides that the ICC will be in compliance if the Commission allows the public to make comments, to ask questions of the Commission and, through telephone calls and e-mail, establish avenues for comment that will be collected by staff and reported to the Commission.
