Return to Hogwarts at Glen Oak Park Amphitheatre

By The Community Word on Aug 30, 07 | 3:39 pm

The Peoria Park District will be celebrating Year Five of the magical world of Harry Potter. Return to Hogwarts will be held on September 22 from 5:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the Glen Oak Park Amphitheatre. The cost is $4.00 per person.

Children of all ages will have the opportunity to participate in several of the classes that Harry has taken. However, aside from the magic, we will be teaching science, conservation, and more. You will study potions with the American Chemical Society, catch up on some reading in the Restricted section of the Peoria Public Library, and study the night sky with the Lakeview Museum.

You may also take a tour of the Knight Bus, tour Hagrid’s Hut, play some wizard’s chess, and check out transfiguration with the local Recycling Center.

It is the goal of this event to use the fanciful world of Hogwarts to provide several different learning opportunities that encourage our audience to understand the importance of plants and animals. When all the classes have ended the children and their families will be invited to stay for a concert by the wizard rock band, Draco and the Malfoys! For more information call 688-3667.

Glen Oak Zoo to Participate in DNR Alligator Snapping Turtle Release Program

The Peoria Glen Oak Zoo has been asked by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to work with them on the alligator snapping turtle release program.

Alligator snapping turtles are on the endangered species list in Illinois. For the next five to ten years, the Zoo will receive up to 300 hatchlings per year. They will keep them warm so they do not hibernate and feed them well to enable them to grow faster than they would in the wild. In the spring, the DNR will pick them up and release them in a suitable area in Southern Illinois.

This year the Zoo will receive only 30 to 40 hatchlings. Most of them will be raised off-exhibit in the winter quarters, but two will be on display in the conservation building by the Chinese alligator.

For more info about the alligator snapping turtle release program, contact Zoo manager Yvonne Strode at the Peoria Glen Oak Zoo, 309-686-3365, extension 302.

Summary of New Laws in Illinois from Senator Dave Koehler

* A new law has gone into effect giving an additional layer of protection for citizens residing in assisted living facilities. House Bill 808 requires certain employees of assisted living facilities to have background checks as a requirement of their employment. Those employees subject to background checks would be those with direct access to residents, their living quarters and financial, medical and personal records. This list would include all individuals employed or retained by a health care employer as home health care aides, nurse aides, personal care assistants, private duty nurse aides or day training personnel.

*There has been an increase in a stipend used to help families of developmentally disabled families stay together. House Bill 1708 increases one of the eligibility criteria for the Family Assistance Program from $50,000 taxable income annually to $65,000 taxable income annually. The Family Assistance Program, in effect for over 15 years, is done on a random selection basis, with a computer generated selection of preliminary applicants being selected as funds become available. The stipend increase goes into effect immediately.

* Legislation now allows for the public to have a say in the meetings and proceedings of the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) has been signed into law by the governor. House Bill 736 will insure transparency and public participation at each regular and special meeting of the ICC that is open to the public. The new law also provides that the ICC will be in compliance if the Commission allows the public to make comments, to ask questions of the Commission and, through telephone calls and e-mail, establish avenues for comment that will be collected by staff and reported to the Commission.
