Casa De Arte usually debuts the work of a new artist on the first Friday of every month. Patrons can then emerse themselves as they enjoy the tasty Mexican food at the restaurant located at 1227 SW Adams St. CASA DE ARTE
The Central Illinois Artists Organization, CIAO, presents diverse opportunities for our community to engage with art first-hand.
On the first Fridays of each month, venues throughout the city serve as inspiration for individuals and groups to participate in exhibitions and visit artists’ studios. These studios offer a glimpse into artistic processes, ranging from painting to pottery and beyond.
The inaugural “First Fridays” event emerged approximately 15 years ago, when a small group of artists decided to extend an invitation to the public to explore their studios. At that time, the Murray building stood as an artistic hub, welcoming printmakers, painters, potters, and photographers. Other notable venues included James and Carrie Pearce’s woodworking and painting studio, Wheel Art Pottery, operated by Jacob Grant, Hiram Toraason’s glass art studio and Liz Barnes, owner of Ear in the Envelope, jewelry.
Studio visits provide a unique opportunity to observe artists at work, often deviating from a conventional sales-oriented approach. Some studios offer classes and workshops, contributing to the vibrant artistic landscape of our region.
Initially conceived as a means of showcasing local artists, the organization has fostered an abundance of creativity, presenting an opportunity for individuals with an interest in nurturing their artistic endeavors to exhibit and connect with fellow artists.
The First Friday concept gained formalization, experienced an expansion of membership and locations, and eventually grew into CIAO. Chelsie Tamms of Lettering Works created the First Friday logo, and, in 2018, the group was incorporated under the auspices of The Contemporary Art Center of Peoria. Currently, CIAO boasts a diverse roster of several hundred artists.
CIAO presents works by its members on several occasions annually. Notably, in September 2025, HOT CIAO showcased its creations at Studios on Sheridan, and the group will exhibit at Monmouth College in January 2026.
Artists of varying skill levels are welcome to participate in group exhibitions by joining the Contemporary Art Center. Non-juried shows are evaluated by professional artists and include awards. Director William Butler oversees the organization’s exhibition management and publishes calls for shows. He and Darlene Jones facilitate every aspect of the process, from installation and promotion to securing a juror who selects the awards for each exhibition. Art openings and First Friday events serve as platforms for socializing, savoring refreshments, and drawing inspiration. There are numerous studios throughout the city, including North Studios located within St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and Foster Gallery in the First United Methodist Church. Arts Partners on Main street is adjacent to My Writing Shed and Lit on Fire books. For more info and other sites, Discover Peoria, compiles a comprehensive list of participating venues.
