“We have always been at war with Eurasia,”
— 1984, George Orwell
Mike Johnson has been getting praised for passing a bipartisan bill sending weapons to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. The $95-billion bill was passed on April 23, one week after we sent in our taxes. What to do with all those checks?
Actually that money does not go to our three allies. It will go to Raytheon, General Dynamics, Boeing, and other weapons manufacturers whose lobbyists swarm Congress. Johnson did not do anything that difficult. Getting Congress to feed the war machine is fairly easy. Unlike passing a farm bill, forgiving student debt, funding Social Security or some other task that is the actual job of Congress.
