Local philanthropist Denise Moore retiring

Denise Moore, CEO of the Black Business Alliance Peoria, Minority Business Development Center and WPNV-FM 106.3, is retiring at the end of June, she announced last month

“My husband and daughter have been pushing me to make this decision for years,” said Moore, adding that she wants to spend more time with family in Chicago and Kansas City. “They finally get their wish.”

Moore’s announcement comes at a time of positive developments at the nonprofit she founded 30 years ago.

“We have a lot going on — manufacturing classes, alternative energy classes, workforce sessions, expansion of the radio station — all kinds of positive happenings,” she said.

The MBDC, at 2139 SW Adams, grew out of the Black Business Alliance, which started in Bloomington.

Moore’s ventures also included Cultural Expressions in Normal, Moore Art on Water in Peoria and low-power radio stations in Bloomington and Peoria. Currently president of UpSouth Energy, Moore served two terms on the Peoria City Council — the first African American woman elected to the council.

“I feel good about the fact that I’m leaving the BBA while on top, with the MBDC in great financial shape, and a talented staff who are more than capable of carrying the vision forward. Plus, the organization has found a dynamic new leader. Luisa Gomez is taking the helm as the new Executive Director of the MBDC.”

Gomez formerly was Vice President of Community Banking Development at Busey Bank Bridge Center.
