The Watch: After brief delay, primary voting underway

The Peoria County Board of Elections Commis-sioners met Feb. 10, with Rosa Kemper absent.

Early voting in Peoria County began that day. It had been postponed because one of the Republican gubernatorial candidates was challenging his removal from the primary ballot for not having enough valid signatures on his petitions. Different counties handled this in different ways, but Peoria County felt it was best to wait until told to by the courts before sending out early voting ballots and opening early voting. About 35,000 ballots were set to be mailed. There is also a need for more election judges. Forty judges will not be available this year.

There were discussions on two repair issues. The Peoria Township Building, which is a polling place, has an issue with its sidewalk needing repairs to make it Americans with Disabilities Act compliant. Bids came in higher than expected so Executive Director Elizabeth Gannon will ask for more bids. She will also look into slab-jacking as an alternative.

The second repair involves plumbing in the newly leased section of the Commission’s building. There is a bathroom in the back, but it does not have any water.
