West Peoria News: Welcome warmth of our community centered at City Hall

APRIL SILVER

As February settles over West Peoria, our community finds itself in a season of transition. The crisp winter air provides a perfect backdrop to reflect on progress and prepare for a bustling spring. While the landscape is currently marked by orange barrels and construction signs, the spirit of “Neighbors Serving Neighbors” ensures that even the longest detours lead back to West Peoria.

The most significant shift for residents this winter has been the ongoing Harmon Highway (Illinois 116) bridge replacement. Since the total closure began on Jan. 2, motorists have had to rethink their daily commutes. The $23.2-million IDOT project to replace the 1935 structure over Kickapoo Creek is a massive undertaking that will last through the end of 2026. While the closure requires patience and extra travel time, it is an essential investment in local infrastructure. As we navigate these temporary routes, it is vital to continue supporting the local businesses that form the backbone of our city. Local businesses remain ready to serve, and our patronage is the best way to ensure they thrive despite the shifting traffic patterns.

Fortunately, the winter chill hasn’t slowed down the activity at our new central hub. The new City Hall at 2421 W. Rohmann Avenue, which celebrated its grand opening this past July, has quickly become the warm heart of the city. With its expanded community room and outdoor spaces, it serves as the perfect venue for monthly Neighborhood Watch and Residents Association meetings. This facility stands as a beacon of progress, evidence that careful planning can create spaces that truly belong to the residents.

ST. PAT’S WEST: Looking ahead, it is time to trade the winter blues for Irish greens! The annual West Side St. Patrick’s Day Parade is just around the corner. Mark your calendars for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 7. The parade will stage at the corner of Park and Farmington Roads, serving as a reminder of our community’s festive spirit. If you or your organization would like to participate, please contact West Peoria City Hall at (309) 674-1993 for the parade application.

The parade route heads west from Bradley Park through the heart of the district and culminates in a celebration at Raber’s Packing Company. This event has become a cherished local tradition, bringing neighbors together to line the streets, cheer on local groups, and celebrate shared traditions. Whether you are a long-time resident or new to the area, the parade is the perfect opportunity to experience the unique charm of West Peoria.

SUPPORT: As winter concludes, staying informed and involved remains the most effective way to navigate the city’s current transitions. Whether it is attending a meeting at the new City Hall, supporting first responders at a fundraiser, or patronizing local businesses during the bridge detour, these actions provide the stability needed as West Peoria manages the infrastructure projects and events scheduled for 2026.
