Arts Alerts: Pour Bros. summer series starts; Garage Band Open Stage is back; musicals ‘Shrek’ and ‘Ruth’ plus ‘Wizard of Oz’ at local theaters’

ART EXHIBITS

  • “Cows in the Gallery” opens at Peoria Art Guild with a reception from 5-8 p.m. July 11. The exhibit continues through July 25.
  • “Fourth Friday” will be at 5 p.m. July 25 at MUSE Gallery in Morton.

CLASSES & LECTURES

  • The Peoria Art Guild offers various weekly adult art classes including watercolor painting, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture, and the Guild also has “Art Without Boundaries,” free kids summer art classes through August in the Peoria Art Guild classroom at the Shoppes at Grand Prairie. MUSIC

  • The Grammy Award-winning rock “big band” Chicago — “Saturday in the Park,” “25 or 6 to 4,” “If You Leave Me Now,” etc. — will appear at the Civic Center’s Prairie Home Alliance Theater July 1.
  • Harmonize Peoria’s Garage Band Open Stage is back every Tuesday for a 10-week summer run at 1133 N. North St. in Peoria.
  • The summer concert series at Pour Bros. starts July 5 with Jack Dupp and Empty Bottles.
  • The Peoria Municipal Band concerts at 7 p.m. Sundays at Glen Oak Park Amphitheater.
  • Barry Cloyd and Band, above, will perform at Wildlife Prairie Park at 6 p.m. July 11.
  • The Contemporary Art Center is presenting “Live at the Five Spot: Pippiu & Daniel” at 6:30 p.m. July 11 and “Live at the Five Spot: Turas & Irish Fest” at 6:30 p.m. July 25.
  • The Grammy-nominated metal act In This Moment, fronted by singer Maria Brink, is set to perform July 19 at the Civic Center’s Prairie Home Alliance Theater.
  • The Peoria Heights Community Band will play at Tower Park at 7 p.m. July 31.

THEATRE

  • Community Children’s Theatre in Peoria presents “Shrek the Musical” July 9-14.
  • Corn Stock Theatre will stage “Wizard of Oz” at Dunlap High School on July 11-13 and 16-19.
  • David Getz’ new “Ruth: The Musical,” will be presented at 7 p.m. July 12 at Five Points Washington.

SPECIAL EVENTS

  • Open houses are scheduled at two historic residential museums this month — at Pettengill-Morron House on Moss Avenue at 10 a.m. July 3, 13, 17, 27 and 31; and at Flanagan House on Glen Oak Avenue at 1 p.m. July 6 and 20.
  • The Peoria Historical Society has four bus tours this month, with three leaving from Kelleher’s at 10 a.m. — “Notable Peoria Women” is July 5; “Lincoln, Abolitionists and the Civil War” on July 19; and “West Peoria and the Uplands” July 26. The fourth is the “World’s Most Beautiful Drive” bus tour leaving Peoria Heights City Hall at 10 a.m. July 12.
  • First Friday Downtown Fun in Pekin at 5 p.m. July 11.
  • The Wheels O’ Time Museum on Route 40 near Dunlap has three events — Children Story Time at 11:30 a.m. July 17; “Stories of the Silver Streak and the Bradford Model T Girls” at 1 p.m. July 19; and Vintage Fire Truck Rides at 1 p.m. July 20.
