If only government could be run like local Christmas funds. It shouldn’t matter who gave to the fund or who benefited from it, no court actions necessary to make sure the benefits are released. It shouldn’t hinge on anybody’s budget, or get caught in the crossfire of two battling parties.

We have to have something to which to cling as our country continues on a turbulent spin that started Jan. 20. We have to hope our democracy can survive the chaos wrought by the deep divisions in our politics — divisions that threaten families, friendships and freedoms we’ve known all our lives. We have to hope the millions who marched in cities across America had an impact on other political leaders who may be able to keep our democracy from becoming an autocracy.
There is no point in bringing up specific issues now because they will change tomorrow. Or next week. The will of the people will be ignored because 47 believes he can do anything he wants and, despite the Constitution, seems to be getting away with it
