Peoria Academy Journalism Club: Drugs are bad, OK? Please avoid using recreational drugs

Recreational drugs can be extremely harmful. These substances can damage various organs in the body. Using excessive amounts of a drug can lead to an overdose, which often results in severe health problems and, in many cases, death. The usage of drugs can create the user to have an unstable mindset. This can lead to poor decision-making that affects both themselves and others.

After the legalization of marijuana in Illinois, it has become more accessible to those searching for it. Marijuana is the most commonly used drug among individuals aged 12 to 17. While marijuana is considered one of the least harmful recreational drugs, nearly 84.15% of youth drug users report using it, according to the National Center for Drug Abuse. Many adults use marijuana but it is more common for adults to use tobacco, which is commonly used in cigarettes and vapes and is legally permitted only for individuals aged 21 and older. However, many teenagers still use tobacco due to its easy availability in homes. Tobacco use can cause serious illnesses such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

Addiction is one of the biggest issues related to recreational drug use. Many drugs are chemically designed to make it difficult to stop using them. Once your body becomes dependent on a drug, trying to quit can cause serious physical withdrawal symptoms. Addiction often leads to the problems mentioned earlier, including cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and overdoses. When your body relies on drugs, it can lose the ability to function properly without them.

Some dangerous drugs, including fentanyl, are sometimes mixed into counterfeit medications. In many cases, people don’t realize they are using dangerous substances until it’s too late. Some “party drugs” are laced with harmful chemicals that can cause serious damage to the body. It’s best to avoid all recreational drugs. You should only take medications that are given to you directly by a medical professional.

Hopefully, after reading this article and understanding the dangers involved, you realize that the best way to avoid severe health risks is to stay away from drugs and never consume drugs/medication without talking to a health-care professional.
