July 5: After 15-year-old Hikaru Indou vanishes, he’s replaced by an entity with his appearance, voice and even memories in “The Summer Hikaru Died.” Telling this being from the real Hikaru is challenging for his friend Tsujinaka Yoshiki. The anime manga series is set for five episodes, with more in the works if it’s well-received. Netflix.
July 9: “The Gringo Hunters” is a 12-episode series following an elite Mexican police unit looking for fugitives, many of them American, who fled to Mexico. Netflix.
July 9: “Ballard” is a 10-episode spinoff from “Bosch,” focusing on LAPD Detective Renee Ballard leading a new cold-case division. It stars Maggie Q in the title role, based on the character featured in several novels by Michael Connelly, and it also features Titus Welliver reprising his role Bosch. Amazon Prime.
July 10: “Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story” is a documentary about the iconic 1975 Spielberg film based on Peter Benchley’s novel. With archival resources, it traces the writing, production and its effect on a new fascination with the predator. Steven Spielberg, Emily Blunt and Guillermo del Toro appear. National Geographic.
July 11: James Gunn’s first big project as the head of the DC Cinematic Universe 2.0 starts, appropriately with “Superman.” David Corenswet stars as Supes/Clark Kent; Rachel Brosnahan is Lois Lane. Other DC characters: Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, Luthor, Mr. Terrific, Metamorpho, Supergirl, and the big-screen, live-action debut of superdog Krypto. In theaters.
July 15: Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game will be broadcast from Truist Park in Atlanta. Fox Sports.
July 17: Eric Bana and Sam Neill star in “Untamed,” a six-episode thriller about a National Parks Service agent investigating a brutal death. Netflix.
July 18: A change of pace, Netflix presents the 40-minute special “Snoopy Presents: A Summer Musical,” with a cast including Brian Doyle-Murray and Bob Bergen (Looney Tunes’ current Porky Pig). It focuses on camp-loving Charlie Brown anticipating his last year at camp but coping with rookie camper Sally’s uncertainties. Meanwhile, Snoopy and Woodstock discover a treasure map that takes them on an adventure. Netflix.
July 19: The WNBA All-Star game is scheduled to show from Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. ABC.
July 23: “Washington Black” is an eight-episode series tracking the 19th century adventures of George Washington “Wash” Black, an 11-year-old boy on a Barbados plantation who flees after a gruesome death. It stars Tom Elli and feature Billy Boyd. Hulu.
July 25: Three times, Hollywood has tried to capture Marvel’s first family, from producer Roger Corman’s unreleased 1994 version to big studio films in 2005 and 2007. With Fox heroes folded into the MCU, Pedro Pascal heading the cast, and an interesting choice of setting it in the 1960s, hopes are high for “Fantastic Four: First Steps.” In theaters.
