West Peoria News: Community interaction makes our city great

APRIL SILVER

With the crisp arrival of true fall air, we can take a moment to reflect on the summer’s energy and the enduring connections that define West Peoria. The articles you read in this paper aren’t written in isolation; they are truly a product of the strong relationships built right here.

This column, for instance, exists because of these relationships — from the steady encouragement of loyal readers to the original vision of notable community members. The best content is always generated at the grassroots level; word gets around, and suggestions are shared while waiting at the checkout line at Haddad’s or during a quick stop at Raber’s to pick up a hot Polish.

These brief, human interactions are the heart of the West Peoria community. Just this past Saturday, a 90-year-old gentleman shared memories in the Haddad’s parking lot. Thank you, sir, for taking the time to brighten my day and for sharing stories of hitchhiking to classes at the University of Illinois back in the 1950s — these moments of shared history are invaluable.

A spirit of service extended throughout the transition from summer into fall. In October, the sixth annual West Peoria Golf Classic once again teed off, raising crucial funds that directly benefit our dedicated Fire Department — a true testament to the community’s commitment to safety and support for our first responders. This generosity flowed right into Halloween night, where the City of West Peoria and the West Peoria Residents’ Association co-hosted another successful Trunk or Treat, providing a fun, safe evening where neighbors connected while children collected candy.

These events feel particularly meaningful now that we have a central hub for our community. The new City Hall, which celebrated its grand opening this past July, has already become a beacon of progress and a welcoming place for residents. This modern facility not only streamlines city operations but also provides the vital space needed for large gatherings, while the prominent Veterans’ Memorial at the civic plaza serves as a daily, visible reminder of the sacrifices of our local heroes.

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE HOLIDAYS: As November draws to a close, this spirit of service continues its forward momentum. Keep an eye out for members of Boy Scout Troop 11, who are currently delivering Christmas wreaths and butter braids from their annual fundraiser, continuing the rich tradition of civic engagement. And be sure to mark your calendars for the official start of the season: the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony — hosted by the West Peoria Residents’ Association and the City — at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec, 1 at City Hall. The festive spirit doesn’t end there, the West Peoria Lighting District and the West Peoria Residents’ Association are once again sponsoring the popular lighting contest, offering cash prizes to the top 3 dazzling lighting displays.

From quick chats in the Haddad’s parking lot to the success of a major Fire Department fundraiser, it is clear that West Peoria’s strength is in its people. Every small act of kindness, every hour volunteered, and every dollar donated reinforces the principle that has guided us for generations: Neighbors Serving Neighbors.
