As the vibrant hues of autumn paint the landscape, West Peoria comes alive with a renewed sense of community and a calendar of events designed to bring neighbors together. From stunning natural beauty to festive gatherings and opportunities to support local organizations, October in West Peoria has fall experiences for everyone.
PICTURESQUE: For those looking to fit in some fall foliage gazing, you have to check out the stunning displays of red, orange, and yellow at Rocky Glen Park right here in our own backyard. This gem, tucked away at 525 N. Kickapoo Creek Road, has been known as a miniature version of Starved Rock and offers rugged terrain for intrepid hikers, a picturesque waterfall, and rock-climbing opportunities for all skill levels. Whether you prefer a vigorous hike or a leisurely stroll, the park provides an ideal opportunity to immerse yourself in the season’s splendor. The Friends of Rocky Glen, a dedicated all-volunteer nonprofit, actively work to promote the health and recreational value of the Kickapoo Creek watershed. They regularly schedule monthly hikes and restoration workdays, and volunteers are always welcome. You can learn more by visiting the site friendsofrockyglen.org or by contacting Dave Pittman at 309-573-2354.
SANDWICHES: Safety and support for our first responders continue to be a focus in the community. The West Peoria Fire Department’s summer fundraiser continues its popular sandwich sales at the Owl’s Nest. Mark your calendars for Saturday, Oct. 18. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., it’s a delicious way to enjoy a Saturday lunch while supporting the brave men and women who keep our community safe.
TRUNK OR TREAT: As Halloween approaches, get ready for a spooky yet safe gathering. The City of West Peoria and the West Peoria Residents Association are again hosting a Halloween favorite, Trunk or Treat from 5-6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at City Hall. Residents who want to participate in the distribution of candy from the trunk of their vehicle can register with City Hall at 309-674-1993 by Thursday,
Oct. 30. This event provides a fun and secure environment for children to celebrate and for neighbors to connect.
SUPPORT OUR SCOUTS: Boy Scout Troop 11 is gearing up for its annual fall fundraiser. The Scouts will be selling Christmas wreaths and butter braids again this year, with sales running through October. This fundraiser supports the troop’s activities and programs, fostering leadership and valuable life skills in our local youth. To support Troop 11 or to inquire about joining, you can reach out to any Scout from the Troop or contact Bob De Sutter at 309-369-8078.
As the leaves change and the air cools, the community’s spirit shines through. Your involvement — whether you’re enjoying a fall festival, participating in a local event, or supporting our heroes — directly strengthens the bonds that make West Peoria a special place. Come out, show your support, and make this a memorable October.
