Representatives of the Captain Zeally Moss Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution attended the Springdale Cemetery Management Authority meeting on July 21, and presented a proposal to create a new “Patriot’s Plaza” on Soldier Hill to recognize the three Revolution veterans known to be buried within the cemetery — Zeally Moss, William Crow and Levin Powell. Phase One of the proposal is designed to be completed in 2026 to coincide with the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Cost for Phase One was estimated between $40,000 to $50,000. A later phase would recognize other Peoria County Revolution veterans not buried with the cemetery. The authority unanimously approved continued project planning but did not commit any financial support at this time.
A Volunteer Day was held July 11 with Bradley University and Peoria Women’s Club representatives cleaning gravestones and undertaking other beautification projects.
