The State of the City address, sponsored by the West Peoria Residents Association and featuring Mayor James Dillon and City Administrator Kinga Krider, will be 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21. It could be canceled due to COVID-19 mitigation rules. Check the West Peoria website

or with City Hall to verify the status. City Hall has no other future meetings scheduled.

The Community Christmas tree was lighted for the season Nov. 30 in the vacant lot between City Hall and the Township building on a brisk evening. The ceremony was well attended and those celebrating were served hot chocolate and cookies in front of City Hall. Drive past and enjoy.

City Hall is closed to the public because of the pandemic. All city meetings are canceled until mediation restrictions end.

West Peoria has positions open in the April 6 election. Offices are four-year terms and include one alderperson in each of the four wards. The alderpersons vote on ordinances, resolutions and other policies as well as serving on additional committees including finance, land use, public safety and transportation.

One outdoor community activity entertained us in early December when our Cub Scouts, their leaders and families had a parade through our neighborhoods. I enjoyed them two separate times when they toured riding on a fire engine with lights, music and were followed by multiple cars with lots of Christmas lights and greetings. It was an excellent “pick me up” for a winter night. A salute and thanks to all who were involved.

There is an opportunity to get outside and involved on Jan. 10 for a workday at Rocky Glen Park. The park is on Creek Road. If you would like to help, contact David Pittman by e-mail, text or phone at dvdpittman@gmail.com or 309-573-2354.

Haddad’s Market has been sold. Mark Wherl, prior owner, is remaining as general manager. Mark has been a huge supporter of community activities. Our respect and thanks go out to Mark.

Mike’s Tavern has been sold and renovated by the new owners, Mark Donahue and Bob Bullock. Mike’s has been in existence since 1938. A new coffee shop, “Touch of Grey Café,” has opened at 2420 W. Rohmann. Stop in, get a good cup of coffee and support this new business.

West Peoria community leaders have served the city consistently and well. Thanks to them for their leadership. I wish our readers and their families good health, closeness, love and enjoyment. Follow safety guidelines so you can enjoy the many activities in 2021 that were missed in 2020.
