From 5-9 p.m. on Aug. 6, the Contemporary Art Center will host its First Friday Studio Tour of 3rd floor studios, where the work of about a dozen area artists are created, shown and sold. The facility also has three galleries open to the public in an open-house format.

Jennifer Hudson stars as Aretha Franklin in “Respect,” opening in movie houses Aug. 13, The 145-minute film follows Franklin’s life from singing in the choir at the church where her father (Forest Whitaker) is pastor to becoming a global superstar and Civil Rights activist. Its cast also includes Marlon Wayans and Mary J. Blige (as Dinah Washington).

- Multi-platinum recording artists Foreigner’s “Hits on Tour” show is set for Aug. 15 at the Peoria Civic Center Theater.

Corn Stock Theatre’s production of “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised]” farce continues Thursdays-Sundays, Aug. 5-15, starring Kayla Blue, Jeff Craig and Sam Hipp, and directed by Anna Oxborrow.

Author, anti-war activist, stand-up comic and Civil Rights partner Dick Gregory is profiled in “The One and Only Dick Gregory,” continuing through August on the Showtime networks. The 113-minute documentary traces the St. Louis native’s life from being a star athlete at WIU/Carbondale to nightclub and TV comic to working with Medgar Evers and the Rev. Martin Luther King. Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock comment.
Sandra Oh stars in “The Chair,” premiering Aug. 27 on Netflix. The series offers an in-depth look at the trials and tribulations of Ji-Yoon Kim (Oh), chair of an English department at a major university trying to turn around her slice of academia.
