Mayor: wrong site for barge mooring

Chillicothe Island

“Save Our Riverfront” is a citizens group organizing a full-throated protest to an application with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers by Ric Hamm who is seeking permission for a barge docking and mooring facility on Chillicothe Island across from an eagle observation tower. An eagle nest is seen here in a cottonwood tree on the island. If granted, the barge docking facility would be for up to 32 barges parked four barges wide. Comments about the application can be sent to James Kelley project manager at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at james.c.kelley@usace.army.mil. Deadline for comments was extended to Nov. 26. Among the groups in opposition are city of Chillicothe, Chillicothe Park District, Chillicothe Fire Protection District and Heart of Illinois Sierra Group. “I am 100% opposed to this project,” Chillicothe Mayor Michael Hughes said at a press conference. “This is not the place for a barge terminal.” (PHOTO BY DAVID ZALAZNIK)
