Councilor Tim Riggenbach requested approval of a $10,000 grant to LULA, NFP, reimbursing recent expenses for the unsheltered. Mayor Rita Ali proposed increasing the grant to cover housing needs through February, not to exceed $80,000. The motion passed unanimously. Funding would come from the American Rescue Plan Funds.
There was much discussion around the horseshoe about identifying root causes and long-term solutions for unsheltered. Community Development Director Joe Dulin discussed long-term housing projects in the works: Phoenix Community Development of former Methodist College of Nursing and Salvation Army expansion at former Labor Temple location on Jefferson St.
Five community members spoke during public comment regarding the unsheltered situation.
