On April 8, the Annual Town Meeting was held. Township officials and electors voted 24-1 to place this Advisory Question before Peoria Township voters in 2026:
“Should the State of Illinois adopt fair and achievable signature requirements for independent and third-party candidates, making them equal to requirements for Republican and Democratic candidates in order for increased ballot access for potential candidates?”

Putting the question of independent candidates on the township ballot is a refreshing step toward more inclusive local democracy. It’s encouraging to see voters being given the chance to decide whether they want more diverse representation. I’m curious to see how this will affect candidate turnout and community engagement in future elections.
