At the January 8, 2013 West Peoria City Council meeting, James (Jami ) E. Silver was appointed as Alderman for the 4th Ward until the April 9, 2013 election. There is an opening in each of the four wards: Candidates for each ward are: Ward 1 Leroy C. Dohm Jr; Ward 2 Jerome (Jerry) Meismer; Ward 3 Brian K. Ganson; Ward 4 James (Jami ) E. Silver.

City Hall also has one position each to fill on the Plan Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals. For more information or to volunteer, contact City Clerk, Carol Stephens at 674-1993.

Contact City Hall 674-1993 if you have questions concerning the following: All residents are required to sign up for garbage service with Waste Management – 1-800-796-9696. You will be charged for this service. Landscape Waste Pickup will begin again on the first Friday in April. This service is included in your Waste Management bill. Winter storm damage limb pick up: – check the City website or contact City Hall for a copy of this policy. Inoperable Vehicles – All vehicles without an up-to-date license sticker are considered inoperable and are in violation of City Code. Any vehicle without said sticker must be stored in a garage. Snow Route/Parking Ban Information: SECTION 3-3-5 DEFINITIONS: All streets within the corporate limits of the City of West Peoria are hereby designated as emergency snow routes. It shall be unlawful to park any vehicles on these streets at any time within twelve (12) hours after a snowfall of two (2) or more inches. Where there has been a snow forecast of two (2) or more inches for any calendar day, it shall be unlawful to park any vehicles on any of these streets for that calendar day. The Street Department Manager shall be authorized to take the necessary actions to have those vehicles which are parked on streets designated as snow routes in violation of the provisions of this Section towed away in order to permit the clearing of snow from the snow routes. The payment of any and all charges incurred as a result of such towing away shall be the responsibility of the vehicle’s owner. In addition to, or in lieu of towing the vehicle, the owner or lessor of the vehicle shall be fined $25.00 for first offense and $50.00 for second offense and for the third offense, the fine may be up to a maximum of $750.00. In all events, each day the violation exists shall constitute a separate offense. [Source 94-18, 95-13, 00-28, 08-04]

Jackie Bowers, Senior World, will be guest speaker at the Neighborhood Watch meeting planned for Wednesday, February 13th at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall. Her topic will include Community Resources for senior citizens and how the “Watch” can help. Deputy Missering will give an update on criminal activity in the West Peoria area. The West Peoria Residents’ Association will meet on February 21st at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall. The public is welcome.

The names of the West Peoria Residents Association decorating winners were not available for the January paper. Here they are in their various categories: (Religious): 2618 W. Ardmore, (Vegas): 2208 W. Sherman, (Holiday): W. 2408 Rohmann, (Simplicity): 2224 W. Kellogg and (Overall): W. 2105 Kellogg. Thanks to the winners and everyone else who decorated their home for the rest of us to enjoy. It is a lot of work that makes our community even more enjoyable.

West Peoria Lions gave out over 15 Christmas food coupons to needy West Peoria families this Christmas. The Lions Club extends a big thank you to the West Peoria Residents Association for donating $500.00 towards this worthy Christmas food program. Donations like that help the West Peoria Lions Club spread funds further to buy glasses or other needed services in the community. Need a gift for your young child or grandchild? Check out the Really Big Coloring books the Club has for sale at Haddad’s Market. Consider coming to one of the Lions Club meetings and see how you too can help your West Peoria community. They would like to again start the Highway Clean-up program but will need volunteers. The Clean Up is done four times a year and needs 10 to 15 volunteers willing to spend a couple of hours picking up litter. The more volunteers equates to less time it takes. With your help the Club can show the commitment to make West Peoria live up to the slogan “Living is best to the West of Peoria” For information about the Club, call 673-6207.

Reminder to recycle. Eye glasses, hearing aids, old keys, ink cartridges, aluminum, and cell phones are all collected by the West Peoria Lions Club. Contact 673-6207 for more details.

Some dates to mark for the upcoming year of events sponsored by the West Peoria Residents Association (WPRA) are: Senior Fair, April 23rd from 10:00 – 2:00 at the Franciscan Center; Community garage sale, May 18th coordinated with the Peoria Park District craft fair at Franciscan Center. (The WPRA will take care of advertising the event and West Peoria participants will only need to provide signage for their own sales.) The Jamboree Run and Jamboree are scheduled for June 1st. The Annual West Peoria Parade and Flag Raising at 10:00 a.m. on July 4th. There are two Concerts in the Park scheduled to be held at the Franciscan Center. The band, SideTracked, will entertain on Sunday July 14th. Another Concert in the Park (band to be announced) is scheduled for August 11th. Night out against Crime is planned for September 7th from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. A new event, a Chili Cook-Off, is being planned for October 5th. To wrap up the year, the WPRA Christmas Party is scheduled for December 1st from 5:00- 7:00 p.m. More details on all the above events will be announced closer to their dates.
