The 19th Jamboree Run kicks off 7 a.m. June 4 in West Peoria. Jamie and April Silver are co-chairing the run. Other activities that day are the Boy Scout Carnival 3 to 7 p.m. All Jamboree activities take place at the Franciscan Recreation Complex; the family friendly Jamboree Festival begins at 6 p.m. and features live music. Refreshments will be served throughout the evening. Proceeds from the event benefit the West Peoria Fire Department, West Peoria Residents’ Association, Boy Scout Troop 11 and various activities held throughout West Peoria.

New in 2016, proceeds from the run go to benefit Special Olympics Illinois. The 4-mile run, 2-mile fitness walk also feature Children’s Fun activities after the race ends for children 5 and under.  Registration fee is $25 for early registration prior to May 31 and $30 after May 31. Registration will be accepted until 6:30 a.m. on race day. Jamboree T-shirts are also available for purchase for $10. Parking will be available at the parking lot at the Franciscan Complex. Registration forms can be picked up at West Peoria City Hall or online at www.facebook.com/jamboreerun.

Packet pickup and registration is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. June 3 in the parking lot at the Franciscan Complex. Sponsors include Koenig Body & Equipment, Haddad’s West Peoria Market, West Peoria City and Township, St Mark’s Catholic School, South Side Bank, Culligan Water, Stecher’s Automotive. Interested in volunteering that day, contact April Silver at 369-2104. Volunteers from the City of West Peoria, Sheriff’s Department, Peoria Park District, Residents’ Association and Fire Department all help with various activities.

Miscellaneous items: West Peoria passed an ordinance prohibiting obstructions in streets, and this isn’t limited to sporting equipment. Grants are available through the City for reimbursements up to $1,000 for external improvements. Contact City Hall for details. Residents found blowing yard waste, including grass clippings, into city streets are subject to a $50 fine. For more details check: www.cityofwestpeoria.org.

Recent Neighborhood Watch meetings have focused on safety and/or criminal issues. The next Neighborhood Watch meeting is 6 p.m. June 8 in City Hall.

The Beautification Committee has completed plantings at Sterling and Rohmann and the City welcome sign as well as placing planters at the Welcome Wall and some local businesses. As the Page Turns Book Club will meet 6 p.m. June 20 in a private home. Seniors on the Go will meet 1 p.m. June 23 in the township building. The West Peoria Lions Club made a decision not to dissolve and will continue to meet on a monthly basis. Next meeting will be 6 p.m. June 13 in City Hall.

The July Fourth Parade steps off at 10 a.m. on the Fourth and travels the streets of West Peoria.  Prepare your home and yard for the thousands who visit our community each year for this important event. It is exciting to be in the parade and/or to view it and see how our community welcomes others. This is the longest running July Fourth event in Central Illinois is well recognized by many.
